UMPIRE RATINGS. Following up on yesterday’s post, here is a rating for accuracy in calling balls and strikes for each major league umpire. The percentages show that on average, the umpires miss about ten per cent of the calls on balls and strikes. They get a higher percentage of balls right because some balls miss by a yard and are easy to call. The best umpire gets 93.6 per cent of the calls right and the worst gets 86.8 per cent of the calls right. I think that baseball fans wrongly expect umpires to be close to perfect and get upset about any missed call. The article also shows that having individual umpire ratings be public information is not a disaster for the umpires.

While watching a game on the MLB network on Wed. 4/17/13, KC vs ATL the home plate umpire drastically missed many, many calls against just one team (ATL). So many in very critical situations it made me think that this umpire had an agenda. This is not good for the game of baseball and should not happen. A major League umpire should not regard a teams record, the score of the game or any petty differences that he might have with a player or management. I had the game on tape and carefully watched each situation. This did not seem like expected occasional human error. Do umpires ever get spoken to or penalized for such blatant behavior? The umpire decided the outcome of this game. The game tapes prove this to be a fact. What is done about a situation like this? Thank You

I agree. Angel Hernandez and C. B. Bucker are the worst umpires I have encountered in my 76 years as a fan. Hernandez, especially ejected Bobby Cox more times than I can count. He has such a short fuse and ego that he has no business being a MLB umpire. Please do something about him. Fire him, force retirement or something.

G!reat work. umpires make mistakes , but the few that continue the same pattern need to be held accountable. (Bring back Dutch Rennert) I grew up watching this umpire, games were fun to watch when he was behind the plate very little mistakes plus no one can beat his strike call.

Last night’s game Detroit vs Chicago White Sox, Brian Gorman threw out Miguel Cabrera in the 1st inning because of a slight diagreement over a hit batter that apparently swung at the pitch. Cabrera did not use any vulgarity with this clown either according to Leyland (who was also tossed). Miguel is honest about this as he admitted the last time he was thrown out to using bad words. People come to see the players and to see a good game. When these umpire react like tyrants it takes away from the game experience for the fans. This umpire is a jerk and he needs to have MLB examine his methods. An umpire is an umpire as far as I’m concerned so he could be gone tomorrow and no one would miss him. Cabrera on the otherhand … well he deserves better as do all players.
