RUNNING INTO A TREE. If being knocked out indicates a concussion, I probably had one playing touch football in our yard with three or four other kids. I have reminisced that we had two large maple trees in the middle of the yard that we played in. We were used to them, and the only accident we ever had came on a day when my brother Elmer and I were wearing brand new plastic football helmets. We were thrilled by them, and perhaps more careless. (I posted here on the economic theory that safety protections can make people less careful, so that a spike in the middle of the steering wheel ought to reduce traffic accidents.) I remember that I was looking back for a pass. My parents had great faith in the recuperative powers of sherry.
