BETTER BEER. I often say that the world is getting better for me and give the examples of coffee and beer. Here is a graphic history of beer making in the United States. The graphic says that we are in “The Golden Age for American Beer.” The number of breweries in America had declined to 44 in 1980; in 2009 there were 1595. The accompanying article, by William Bostwick, points out that beer was important in the United States from the very beginning. In the early days American colonists placed ads in British newspapers trying to persuade brewers to emigrate. Washington, Jefferson and John Winthrop were home brewers.
