A smaller gross national product this year makes for smaller gross national products into the future. Reducing unemployment helps with other problems. Health care costs are a smaller percentage of the economy. There is more money to deal with the environment. State governments have more revenue. Pension costs are less threatening. Getting macroeconomic policy right is difficult, but important.
