CORK. Frank O’Connor tells a story about Joyce which gives an idea of why reading him leads into a world of word associations and symbols in which everything may represent something else. (O’Connor’s story is in the Viking Critical Edition of PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN edited by Chester Anderson). O’Connor tells of a visitor to Joyce’s home who sees a picture of Cork in an unusual frame. It turns out that Joyce has gone to some trouble to have a frame made out of cork for the picture of Cork.
