SARTRE OR CAMUS—WHO IS COOLER? I posted here a week ago about how “cool” has become an important concept. I have since read Jonathan Webber’s interesting review of Andy Martin’s book THE BOXER AND THE GOALKEEPER: Sartre versus Camus (TLS December 14). For me, the essay illustrated the importance of “cool” in philosophy and literature and everything else. Webber says that Andy Martin presents Albert Camus as “the epitome of ‘degree zero’ laid back cool with Jean-Paul Sartre as the very opposite….” Webber disagrees, arguing that it was Sartre who was cooler than Camus because Sartre didn’t care about looking cool.
