THE THEFT OF THE SCRAPS FROM EIGHT SCHOOL BUSES. This article in the Chicago Tribune reports on the overnight theft of eight school buses. They were traced to a scrapyard the first thing in the morning by a GPS tracking device from one of them. The GPS system was working, but the buses were scrap. The buses were estimated to be worth $250,000; the scrap would be worth $12,000 to $28,000. If you are wondering, as I was, how they could get away with it, they didn’t. The owner of the scrap yard was among those arrested.
The police in Toledo have just arrested a bunch of men from a chop shop that has been stealing semis and their contents (among other items) to break up and sell as scrap. What’s amazing is that some of the alleged perps had already done time for running a huge chop shop here a decade or so ago and were doing it again.
Its very lucrative when you’ve destroyed the evidence. I guess they don’t usually overlook a gps device that gives them away. Perhaps a lot of yellow paint on the scrap would have also been a sufficient clue.
