BREWING ANCIENT SCANDINAVIAN BEER (“NORDIC GROG”). Wayne Curtis has another informative article on the history of alcoholic beverages in the December Atlantic. He reports on the efforts of Dogfish Head, a brewery which is introducing a reconstruction of “Nordic grog”, a beverage which archaeological evidence suggests was popular in Scandinavia between 1200 B.C. and 200 A.D. The new beverage will be added to the six brands (“Ancient Ales”) of beer it sells which are based on ancient recipes reconstructed with the assistance of Patrick McGovern, a biomolecular archaeologist (I have previously posted on research by Dr. McGovern, including here).
