Grand Central was a critical target because disabling the 9 rotary converters would paralyze the northeast railroad system. The subterranean chamber was heavily guarded by a a platoon of armed solders and its existence was concealed, but the Nazis found about it and sent two submarines to land four saboteurs on Long Island. They were soon captured and two of them were executed. The saboteurs were planning to use sand to disable the converters.
