ANOTHER NINETEENTH CENTURY CRAZE—THE GRECIAN BEND. This article by Rebecca Onion in Slate from a year ago (April 3, 2013) describes an important fashion trend in the 19th century: the Grecian Bend. It was a fashionable way of standing and walking. The lady bent forward in an exaggerated way. The contemporary drawings accompanying Rebecca Onion’s article show what looks like a 45 degree bend from the waist. The posture was related to the bustle, which left a great deal of heavy material gathered at the middle of the lady’s back. I was just about to link to your last post with something related to the Grecian bend when I saw you’d posted this. I stumbled upon the 1905 walk, which includes some lovely imagery.
