SOME SALACIOUS LITERARY TRIVIA. I came across this trivia item in a footnote to an essay by Ardis Butterfield in the London Review of Books (August 27).

Question. What writer wrote to her husband as follows: “…the Mandril [her husband's pet name for her] wishes me to inform you delicately that her flanks and rump are now in finest plumage, and invites you to an exhibition.”?
