T S ELIOT’S FIRST WIFE. The passage is quoted in a memoir in the London Review of Books (August 11) by Mary-Kay Wilmers, the editor of the London Review of Books (link via Arts & Letters Daily).
It was written by Vivienne Eliot, T S Eliot’s first wife. To me it reflects poetic talent, extraordinary sensitivity, and a world view that sees symbols everywhere. Mary Jane called it “emblematic thinking—medieval”.
Mary-Kay Williams describes some of Vivienne’s mental problems in the memoir and says: “For her, as for him [Eliot], there was no clear demarcation between objective and subjective reality.”
