Nick sent me a link to this article on the Gizmodo site by Tom McKay about how: “Switching its in-flight magazine Hemisphere to a lighter variety of paper that saved an ounce a copy has saved United Airlines 170,000 gallons of fuel a year.” The cost saving was $290,000 annually.
Nick wrote: “I had no idea that weight had such a direct impact on fuel. You’d think they could…very seriously re-evaluate what they have on planes to save a ton of waste.”
The article also discusses trimming sales of perfume and chocolate in duty free on flights. I have always been perplexed at who was buying those things on planes, rather than, say, in the airport. I suspect most customers would rather they simply stop selling those items on flights and reduce waste / ticket prices.
