THE COLLECTED E MAILS OF…. We are fascinated by the shreds of evidence that archaeologists come up with about the daily lives of people in the past. Think of the masses of data that will be available to future historians and biographers. Instead of THE COLLECTED LETTERS OF…. we will have THE COLLECTED E MAILS OF….
This may be a happy thought in some ways; since e-mails deal with so much trivia as well as meaningful matters that letters often encompass, we may get more complete pictures of people through their electronic correspondence. However, for a long time now I’ve sadly considered how ugly our physical leavings will be. Instead of leaving behind beautiful ceramic water jars and intricate tapestries, we’ll leave broken plastic computers and fast food detritus. I feel sorry for the archeologists of the future.
