SCRABBLE AND LOVE. Judith Thurman, the distinguished biographer (Mary Jane loves her biography of Colette), had an article in the January 19 New Yorker about how important playing Scrabble is to her. She noted, however, that on Facebook some games of Scrabble can last as long as a month “with players making a move whenever the spirit moves them.” She said that: “A monthlong game of Scrabble, in my opinion, is about as appealing as a monthlong sex act.” My first thought on reading this was that people have been enjoying correspondence chess in a leisurely way for years. They think about their moves all day, consciously or unconsciously. My second reaction I am saving for Valentine’s Day, tomorrow.
