HERDING SHEEP. We knew an Old English Sheepdog who once organized a group of school children who were waiting for a bus. I was pleased to see an article by Michael M. Phillips in the Wall Street Journal (December 27) about how some owners of border collies rent or buy sheep to keep their dogs busy by satisfying their need to herd. Phllips begins the article with a story about a border collie who “was expelled from puppy school for herding the black [Labradors] into a corner.” A good sheep herding dog instinctively know circles the sheep rather going into the middle of them. A border collie controls sheep “with a relentless stare.”
