“IT’S BRILLIANT, INNIT BLUD?” (COMMENT). I posted here about John McWhorter’s argument that Shakespeare’s language should be updated to make it more understandable for modern audiences. I noted here that Mary Jane and I take different positions on the issue and quoted Loki-69′s comment that: “I think Shakespear needs to talk in modern English, innit, bruv?” I responded that I was in favor of multiple versions of Shakespeare’s plays, including some with updated language.
Loki-69 then commented: “Brilliant. I wasn’t expecting this, bruv. It’s brilliant, innit, blud?
(If Shakespear was modernised to have his plays written in this way, I would go to see it. It would be amazing.)”
I would be happy to see a Shakespeare play “translated” into current British slang. I think there would be great energy and new insights. I have to acknowledge that I would need to have subtitles to help me.
