INTERRUPTING AT DINNER. I am inclined toward Deborah Tannen’s theory of interruptions because our family had a conversational style which was close to everybody talking at once. It is perfectly possible to carry on multiple conversations at the same time. I know this because our family did it a lot of the time, and friends have commented on the phenomenon. I think that this style is why I have a tendency to start a sentence loudly and then trail off as I run out of breath. I needed the burst of sound to seize the floor. I didn’t need to be ready to finish the sentence because I knew I wasn’t going to able to finish it.
