BEANS AND STRAWBERRIES. Adam Gopnik begins an essay in the New Yorker (May 26) on the problems of translation by telling a family anecdote about a time when he was eating with his family in a trattoria. Gopnik thought he had ordered fragoline (wild strawberries) for desert but was served fagiolini (green beans). Gopnik’s children continue to think this is hilarious.
