THE SENTIMENTALITY CHALLENGE—-2015. I have posted, for example, here, about our Christmas ritual in which before we open presents on Christmas day, I read Pearl Buck’s book CHRISTMAS DAY IN THE MORNING aloud, and everybody watches to see how far I get before I tear up. This year, I was asked by our short story group to read it aloud at the last meeting before Christmas. I agreed, thinking that I could use all the practice that I can get. Unfortunately, I only got a couple pages in before I had to ask Mary Jane to finish the reading.
Another ominous sign for this year’s challenge is that I watched Will Farrell’s Elf with Mary Jane and Annalisa, and teared up a couple of times.
I think the secret may be to read the story quickly without thinking about it.
